From the chair

A cold, Keytruda news, and Uncle Mistletoe and Aunt Holly return

Yeah, it’s pretty much been the chair (or the couch—honest to God, how do I have the patience to watch House reruns?) this week. I’ve had a cold for the last few days, nothing horrid but just enough to make me feel lousy and at times, moderately cranky. However, at my crankiest last night Ernie made me my favorite I-don’t-feel-well meal of scrambled eggs and buttered toast. It makes me feel like a little kid in all the best ways.

We’re making our way through the mountain of leftovers although honestly it’s probably just a foothill or a hell of a slope at this point. I’m thinking gluten free penne with some of the glorious truffled brie that Boo and Doug brought for dinner tonight…with something green…peas? spinach? to make it look the tiniest bit healthier.

We’ve had an odd stretch of no doctor appointments. Friday I have one and the next week we go in for Ernie’s next Keytruda infusion. After that he will go to every SIX WEEKS instead of every three weeks. This is great of course but does freak me out a bit. I’m not clear on whether this because of the disease stabilizing or whether it’s a matter of you can only be on Keytruda so long. I wasn’t at the last appointment so I will query Vasireddy next week. Oh, and I still haven’t followed up with Barnes for a follow up appointment to the Pluvicto which they evidently don’t think is necessary. Eh.

We’ve been listening to Christmas music but Uncle Mistletoe and Aunt Holly have yet to appear. Perhaps this weekend. My beloved Diana got to go to a luncheon/lecture on…oh hell, I’m just going to post her email here (hope that’s ok, Diana).

Well, Aunt Holly and Uncle Mistletoe had quite an interesting afternoon when I took them out of their holiday box. They attended a luncheon in honor of Leslie Goddard’s (local historian who gives lectures) presentation of “State Street Stores Celebrate Christmas in the 40’s To The Present.” The lunch menu was inspired by Marshall Field’s iconic wedge salad, chicken pot pie, and chocolate dessert, and AH and UM were the centerpiece at our table! Leslie had never handled the original toys before, so they made her day! Her program included MANY pictures of the fabulous window displays at Field’s, Carson’s, The Fair Store, and 4 other department stores on Michigan Avenue. The Cinnamon Bear and Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer were also featured. It brought back such wonderful memories!

Despite our own Uncle Mistletoe and Aunt Holly I am decidedly jealous of Diana’s wonderful guys. They are, shall we say, the real deal.

Christmas will be quite different for us this year as we are not entertaining (no Fats and Kristi Rose, sniff, sniff) and since things are a bit tight the presents will be scarce. I gotta say it does take a load off though. No anxiety about cooking, cleaning or shopping. It makes me look forward to it all the more oddly. Maybe I’ll send Leo and Ernie out to get a tree this weekend!

Side note: if you are reading this on my blog at thesandwichlife.com then it is a few days after I wrote it. I have started sending out my blog posts via Substack and if you subscribe you will not only support this writing (and Ernie and me and Hattie!) but you will also get our news, such as it is, the day I write it. As always, we appreciate all the support we receive in so many different ways.

Onward.
