Turkey Guilt and a Question for you

We had a second turkey in our refrigerator because they are so damn cheap at the grocery store this time of year. In other years we occasionally go all out and get an organic, heritage bird. Honestly though, it ends up costing a fortune and I’d rather spread my effort to buy local meat throughout the year rather than focusing on one big occasion. So 49¢ a pound it was.

This time, with Ernie feeling better, we managed to prep and cook it the way we’d planned: salted ahead (WHY must we call that dry-brining?) and spatchcocked. And good God in heaven, it was about a billion times better than the one we had on Thanksgiving. Same size, same cheap turkey…but sooo much better. My apologies to Dennis, Boo, Doug, Trinity and Owen. Sorry, guys.

I had the last piece of tourtière for breakfast yesterday and MAN it was good. So good there is no picture. I think it’s kind of like a stew, things meld into something better than the sum of their parts after a day or two. We had to make a second batch of cranberry sauce to go with it. I can’t wait to make it again for Christmas Eve.

And now, in further leftover news:

NOW the question. Maybe not a direct question but some musings that welcome comments and thoughts. This blog has been acting as a record and as the always needed therapy of processing life for me since 2006. Wow. I was a different person back then. Look, this is what we looked like back then!

I loved writing this blog, and I still do. I never got around to monetizing my blog and of course, that’s when I should have done it. Blogging is pretty much passé now, is it not?

However, I am still here, writing away, whether I’m showing off Ernie’s weekly biscuits or Leo’s wedding gathering. It still keeps me grounded. It helps me process our highs and lows and put them in perspective. And most of our highs and lows are pretty universal so hopefully it is sometimes of use to others.

Over the years I’ve gotten all sorts of email pitches to include ads or this or that but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it and I also had too much on my plate to think about it. I added the Buy Me a Coffee widget a while back and although it’s not huge amounts, those coffees have helped, both financially and mentally.

I’m pondering moving over to Substack and wondering whether folks had any thoughts on that. There would still be some free posts but others would be by subscription. I don’t expect to reel in the big bucks, it’s not as though I have a huge readership, but every little bit helps.

Maybe it’s time. Something to ponder.

Onward.
