WHEW

ohhhhh what a day.  My boss gave me the afternoon off since it was the last day before the boys went back to school.  It was so kind and so of course I fell into the whole Sunday thing where you get these great expectations and then the reality doesn't match up.  I thought when I got home we'd go shopping for school supplies (because it's the day before school and  I'm the loser mother who hasn't bought school supplies yet) which to me sounded like great fun.  I ALWAYS loved buying school supplies.  Well, um.....the boys don't have the same fondness for it. Is this a gender issue?  I didn't believe in gender issues much until I had boys. Everytime I gave Leo a choice he just sighed and said, "I DON'T care....I don't care ANYthing about school."  Great company let me tell you.  And I couldn't help but compare it to last year when everytime Owen put something for himself in the shopping cart he put his hands over his head and yelled YAY.  Not so much this year....  Then we couldn't find the markers we needed at Meijer's blah blah blah and I said we had to go to Target and Owen acted like I'd shot him and then ripped his favorite toys aways from him to finish him off. Things deteriorated until I took the boys out to the van to wait while Ernie spent a shitload of money.  Later in the afternoon the boys tried to be extra charming as they knew they had pushed it and I told myself I should be kind and forgiving because I know they're anxious about school but damn they irritated me.  ANYWAY...eventually, after burning a pan of chick peas I was trying to cook for hummus for my mother.....we set off for Meet The Teacher Night.

Whew.  Owen was excited to see Duncan in his class and his teacher, whom I really like, was charming and commented on how much he'd grown and all was good.  Then we met Leo's teacher and uh.....he seemed to LIKE her.  I did too.  We got the postcard from her today and we walked in the room and she said, "you must be Leo" and THEN he found a whole tub of Boxcar Children books.....  They came home.....HAPPY.

Whew....it may only last a day but I'll take what I can get.....
