The Power of Seeds
Without seeds I might have killed my big-head child today. I got up a little late as I'd been WAY exhausted after the day at work yesterday. Not that it was that tough a day but between 700 some people and not feeling totally over my cold I was wiped out last night. So I got up and came down stairs only to have Owen start asking me, "can I do the electric things today? Can I please?" I looked at Ernie blankly and he explained that he meant the computer/DS/TV etc----all the things that had been forbidden for the weekend for him due to ummmm.....well as he put it, the 'bad choices' he made on Friday. I of course said no fucking way or something to that effect and then Ernie suggested going out for breakfast. Then Leo took this as a personal challenge since he already has to be out of the house THIRTY-FIVE HOURS A WEEK FOR SCHOOL. We 'discussed' it and all took off. Went to Sammy's and ordered my standard chorizo quesadillas but the whole experience was tainted somewhat by old big-head. By the time we left I was really pissed off that we'd spend thirty some bucks on a breakfast that was NO FUCKING FUN. And sometimes when Mommy gets pissed....well, she gets REALLY pissed. So Leo was huddled in the back seat in disgrace, Owen was rubbing my shoulder and trying to tell me jokes to cheer me up and finally Ernie announced we were all going to Prairie Gardens no matter what anyone thought.
Bless him because seeds always make me happy. We wandered around for awhile while I was till being somewhat well, uh, if I were a child I would use the word sullen but since I'm not let's just say 'quiet." I started buying tomato plants even thought it's probably too early but what the hell, and picked out some herbs. Owen asked if he could buy a plant so I said they could each pick a plant. Of course I was thinking of the $1.99 tomato plants but of course Owen showed up with a $12.99 perennial he liked. I went along with it as I hadn't specified a price (although later he traded it in for some impatiens and a marigold).
I was moving into a slightly better mood with all the green around me. I announced it was time to look at seeds and I gotta tell you.....nothing does my heart better than little boys excited about buying seeds. Leo was so happy he was doing the Leo bounce. We bought far more seeds than we need but it made me so happy. Leo is really the gardener at heart. Owen gets excited and enthusiastic and is probably more help in the garden when you get right down to it...but Leo is a gardener at heart.
My sweet peas.
Thank god for seeds.....
here are the boys planting kale and swiss chard yesterday with Ernie....
and here are a couple picture I took yesterday as I sat in the front yard watching the sky get grayer and grayer.....
Leo really likes the 'heart flowers' too.....
a redbud tree silhouetted against the gray sky.....then it started sprinkling and I headed in....
