Champaign-Urbana Memories....

I can’t resist sharing some C-U memories–even though theyaren’t my own!  Our friend Richard, who was at our most recent party, shared some old pictures of his.  Look at him---he’s gorgeous, isn’the?  Of course my comment was onhow he looked, Ernie’s comment on the other hand---upon seeing the posters onthe wall , was “oh please tell me that the Shadows of Knight played around here.”

Richard’s reply was wonderful…..just listen to this….

Sure they did. We caught The Shadows ofKnight at least twice. Also, The Cryan Shames (2 or 3 times),The New ColonySix, The Buckinghams, Baby Huey & The Babysitters, The Fabulous Gentrys,Gary Lewis & The Playboys, and others escaping me.

Most of those above were at various"teen dances" (Robesons parking lot, St Pats Parish Center, LincolnSquare, The Red Lion, Chances R, etc).

We caught Peter & Gordon at theVirginia Theater!

A little later ...

The TURTLES in the Illini Rooms A,B,Cin the Union!

and check this out ...

HUMBLE PIE, also at the Union, withSteve Marriott and a very young Peter Frampton.

The YOUNG RASCALS at the ChampaignCounty Fair! (1966?)

I've seen most ofthe biggies thru the years, but my first ever rock & roll concert was alsoone of the biggest deal concerts I've ever experienced. It was:

ROY ORBISON!!!!!!! at the ChampaignCounty Fair in 1962!  Freddie "Boom Boom" Cannon was the opener.Dick Biondi was the MC!

I twice (each)caught Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark at Ruby Gulch (4th & Green) in theearly '70s.

Ooh, and a little later in the '70s(maybe 1979?): Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee @ Panama Red's!!!

Many, many, many, MANY more concertsfollowed, but that makes a dent in the early ones. Y'got me on a Memory Laneroll.  :)

And furthermore, inthe category of "They Sure Don't Make County Fairs the Way They UsedTo" : at the Moultrie-Douglas County Fair (at Arthur, I think?) in 1969,we caught :

Johnny Cash, June Carter (I don't thinkthey were married yet(?), The Carter Family, Carl Perkins, and The StatlerBrothers....

I hope you don't mind me posting thisRichard.....it was just such fun!
