Random Notes from the Sandwich Life
1. I officially have spring fever. It doesn't usually hit me too early as I love winter and am always hoping for one more snowstorm but my daffodils are poking through, crocuses are blooming at my mother's house and I'm moving into that phase where I constantly wander the yard looking for things greening or poking their heads out.
2. I want to revamp the yard a bit this year. We grew more vegetables last year than we had since we gave up a big garden when the boys were little (it kept making me weep when I would see all the weeds) and it felt good. So I think we'll pull out some daylilies and move a few perennials to open up a bit more room. Just things we'll use a lot: a couple kinds of kale and swiss chard, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes and....hmmmm....I don't know. What have you planted that you end up really using? I think cents to seeds I get more use out of the kale and swiss chard than anything else. Tomatoes haven't been great the last couple of years but I'll do some just the same. I just haven't had wonderful luck with sugar snap peas or pole beans. I did some yellow summer squash last year but it wasn't terribly prolific. I like those flying saucer shaped squash but they can be TOO prolific. Hmmmm....something to think about. Any recommendations from your garden?
3. Of course I'll have to have lots of zinnias and cosmos. I think I'd like to replant some hollyhocks as well. My father loved his hollyhocks. There was a period of time where it was hard to come across the seeds for the single hollyhocks so my father was always stopping by the side of the road--in his fancy lawyer duds no less---to steal seed pods.
4. Owen seemed quite pleased with his guitar lesson. He said his teacher reminded him of Kurt on the Gilmore Girls. Evidently that was a good thing.
5. Oh, and I'm softening a bit on American Pickers. I saw a repeat of the first one where he calls his brother to help him get something home and it made him a bit more appealing. But still....the painted Mercedes van just GETS me. Hmph.
6. I'm on kind of a Phil Lee kick at the moment. He amuses the hell out of me and can write quite a song as well....
