Missing the Loop of Old

My friend Rob recently sent me this wonderful travelogue of Chicago from the late 40's.

What's remarkable about it is both how much things have changed and yet how much has remained.  Yes, there has been almost nonstop growth and development and yet you can see the bones of the city, as it is today, there in the video.  It inspired me to go try to find something similar from the late 70's---not that I had much luck.  When I was in high school, during the summer or breaks, I often would take the train in and wander the Loop all day....time at the Art Institute, time at Marshall Field's of course...and just walking.  Today the Loop has been pretty Daleyized into something prettier and cleaner----no messy newsstands and the like these days.  When I was wandering around as a teenager the Loop looked very different---something I forget until I happen to see an old picture.

These pictures are all older than what I was looking for and yet they capture some of how I remember the Loop....and I miss that....
