Family Game Night

Good God but I am tired.  VERY busy weekend…mostly working.  Sunday was 7 a.m. to about 10:30 at night and I am still wiped out from all of it combined with the vestiges of a cold….or is it allergies at this point?  Anyway, the work event was a huge success and well worth the work….I just need a weekend BADLY.

Since Ernie and I both were so busy over the weekend and the days leading up to  it that we tried to savor Saturday as our somewhat free day.  We did our standard Saturday:  farmers’ market for Ernie and me and then lunch at Fries and Peanuts for all of us after Owen’s guitar lesson.

Leo had proclaimed Saturday evening to be Family Game Night.  His plan was that we all got a treat (he chose potato chips, Owen chose roast chicken, I had planned appetizers for Ernie and me but we never got around to it during the game) and we’d play the Simpson’s version of Monopoly.  I used to have my childhood version of Monopoly but it got ruined in one of our basement floods….so the Simpson’s version, courtesy Uncle Dennis, it was.

What this happy little picture doesn’t show you is how earlier in the afternoon I got so infuriated by a certain child of mine that I kicked the other kids out of the house and yelled at him.  Then, because that hadn’t been satisfying enough I slammed the bathroom door and when that wasn’t enough either I slammed my hand on the door just so I could have some more noise.  Damn that hurt.  I was still holding a grudge (I know parents aren’t supposed to hold grudges but come ON) when Family Game Night officially started at 6:00 p.m. (Leo had planned the schedule).  Owen decided he wanted to be the banker.  It took him about 20 minutes to hand our money out and as I waited I thought “who the fuck invented this game this is going to kill me” to myself (I'm not a big game person----that was Judi's role).  We eased into the game however and I must admit that about halfway through, admidst much laughter, I started to think that this was a really good idea and we should do it every Saturday.  After another hour and a half however I was back to thinking “who the fuck invented this game and why does it last so long?”

It was FASCINATING watching the two guys play the game.  Leo of course was quite serious and followed the rules EXACTLY.  Owen, on the other hand was constantly trying to make deals and when he’d pay rent he’d say, “oh keep the change” and when I’d protest he’d say, “but really….I want YOU to have it.”  I swear that boy will never have a penny to his name.  Strangely enough however….Owen ended up winning the game.  Leo’s theory is that he put some of the money that was supposed to be paid to the bank into his own pile of cash.  He might just be right.  My sweet peas.  My sweet, sweet peas.
