Random Notes from the Sandwich Life

1.  This morning Ernie got up at 4:30 because he forgot we hadn't changed the clock in the bedroom.  He'd already made coffee by the time he realized it.  Owen was thrilled because he had lots of time to play before school.  Me?  I happily slept on....

2.  Although when I did get up I was so spacy that Ernie looked at me just now and said, "maybe you shouldn't go to work."  I assured him I would get more....ummmm....cognizant of the world around me sometime soon.

3.  I'm not sure I am going to survive Owen.  I can only imagine him as a teenager.  See...Judi and I had this deal....when the boys got too difficult in their teenage years, they were going to go live with her.....  NOW what?

4.  Owen is the most helpful guy in the world.....when it's HIS idea.  Yesterday I forced the boys into yard work and poor Owen acted as though it was high torture.  Leo's pretty goodnatured about it and even though he won't admit it I think he kind of likes it.  Leo will be the gardener.  Of course when I say that he rolls his eyes and says, "why would I be a gardener when I HATE going outside?"  But he'll see....he will be.  Owen was so exhausted by some trips to the compost pile that he could barely move and when I asked him to trim some stems down he complained about things getting in his eyes....and so on and so on. ARGH!  "I'm soooo tired, can I go play with my friends?" he asked.  I responded as a typical parent and said "well, if you're too tired to do this then you're too tired to play with your friends."  To which he replied, with a hurt look on his face, "Why are you being so mean?" Ay yi yi.....

5.  Of course the other morning he kissed me and told me seriously that he would run through a battlefield just for a kiss from me.  Then he thought about it and decided that what he would do was CRAWL through the battlefield so the bullets would go over him and he demonstrated his maneuver.  Of course then Leo piped up telling Owen that the soldiers could just point their guns down toward the ground and the conversation went on from there so I just accepted my kiss and went on downstairs.

6.  We ended up having a lovely evening though....we curled up and watched a movie together and made popcorn by popping the whole ear of popcorn that we got from the Moore Family Farm at the farmers' market.  Even Leo got excited about it and he won't eat popcorn.  Of course moments after this picture was taken Ernie dropped the entire bowl on the floor.  We had more ears to pop though....and I swear it was the sweetest, most tender popcorn ever.

7.  So Sunday was one of those Ray Davies days as Ernie calls them.  Highs and lows, peaks and valleys....I guess you can't really have them any other way, huh?  I started off Sunday morning by watching the Sex Pistols last show while I ate some of Ernie's biscuits, drank coffee milk and perused the News-Gazette.  My beloved Stupefaction blog not only highlighted that, but some cool Slim Gaillard interviews that Ernie and I watched later as the boys played at Parker and Dema's.  And he reviewed a book about Edwyn Collins which looks pretty fascinating so when our movie was over I went upstairs and curled up with it on my Kindle.  Not a bad Sunday after all....
