Ceiling Fans, Scratchy Throats and Pernil
I seem to be picking up every wretched little bug floating around of late. Friday night we had Heather and Steve over for dinner which was delightful except for the fact that I overcooked the pork. Why, oh WHY do things never turn out as well when you cook them for someone else? After they left Owen and Ernie and I lazed around in the living room watching the fire and listening to Michael Jackson (Owen's request) so I went to bed happy but woke up with a scratchy throat feeling tired. I pushed through the morning errands though. Got beautiful spinach and potatoes from Blue Moon Farms, went to three, count 'em three big box stores to look for ceiling fans. Man, most of them are ugly. Our second floor gets so hot in the summer though that we really count on them. We'd replaced the one in our room but Leo's room still has the ugly black and gold one that was there when we moved in and Owen's wasn't working. Also got some paint samples....I'm thinking Silver Fox for the living room (thank you Peggy) and Taos Taupe for our bedroom. Ernie painted some pieces of cardboard and we're moving them around the room to see how they look in different lights. Later Ernie put up Owen's ceiling fan. He actually is quite good at doing things like that but LISTENING to him....well, remember the father in The Christmas Story? The way he swears non stop while working on the furnace and the family just falls quiet, flinching occasionally at a particular outburst? Yup. Later we had a quiet evening, feasting on leftovers and popcorn, reading and watching tv. This morning we got up and enjoyed a particularly good batch of Ernie's biscuits before attacking various house projects. The other ceiling fan, moving lego, hanging pictures, etc. The house is kind of a disaster but I feel like we actually accomplished a bit. I've got a Puerto Rican roast pork in the oven....planning to serve it with black beans, brown rice and spinach. Ernie's at the store and I'm going to start chicken soup when he gets home so we can have that later in the week. You know, I like eating chicken soup, but I LOVE making it!
Oh, and I took some pictures (not great ones but pictures just the same) of some old painted signs on buildings yesterday. I love seeing the faint traces of old signs on buildings and they are disappearing so I thought I should try to catch a few. You can see them in the photo album called C-U Ghost Signs in the right column. There are more out there so please feel free to contribute!
