It Was Thirty Years Ago Today....
Let's just say the birthday party was something of a debacle. Both boys behaved wretchedly. Leo limited it to one grand moment of assitude but Owen, well Owen.... I know, he's 9 and great expectations can be a dangerous thing to a soft hearted boy but oh MY did he get talking, talking, talking, o.k. I'll admit, yelling-to after everyone left. Not a pleasant evening. I dramatically took to my bed in tears, read Georgette Heyer and dwelled on how I was failing my children. I stoicly watched the Golden Globes with Ernie, eventually drank some Jameson's because I couldn't sleep and finished my Georgette Heyer. By that time everybody else was asleep so I gave in.
Leo apologized sweetly and seriously and I wasn't as mad at him. Owen is remarkably good at remorse, God help me. We're working on getting it through his head that remorse doesn't change the fact the actions happened. Well, wish us luck with that is all I can say. The boys did wake us up this morning (actually Ernie was already up so they made him get back into bed) with a homemade card saying something to the effect of "Congratulations on the 30th anniversary of the day you met and I hope you don't faint this time Mom and I'm sorry about yesterday." And they taped some candy to it. Well, I say 'they' but I think Leo's role was mostly standing supportively by his brother's side.
Geesh. Whaddya gonna do?
Hopefully I won't faint at Ernie's feet the way I did 30 years ago (I can't believe I'm admitting to that huge number) but Ernie's come down with a cold and it seems to be tickling at me as well so we cancelled the evening we had planned with friends coming over for dinner. I'm disappointed but Ernie is really not himself and the last thing we want to do is make our lovely pregnant friend sick. I mentioned to Owen that they weren't coming over because Daddy was sick, and besides we didn't want to make Heather sick and he looked at me in delight and said, "She's PREGNANT?" When I said yes he just smiled delightedly and said, "Oh, I'm SO HAPPY for her!" I swear that boy will be the death of me....and here I thought it would be Leo.....
