Random Notes from the Sandwich Life

1.  Busy weekend this weekend but it feels good.  I get off work at noon and will scurry home and start cooking and encouraging Ernie to clean.  Then will come a point when I say, "oh, the hell with it" and relax.  Don's Meet and Greet at 5:30.  The Duke of Uke (abbreviated version) will play, we will eat, we will drink and I will spend a lot of time hugging people.  Then tomorrow morning we'll head out to an antique show in Arthur.  When we get back home Owen has specified that he and his father HAVE to go down to Dr. Howard and shoot baskets.  I imagine that Leo and I will just luxuriate in the quiet and be lazy.  Somewhere in there we will do the final shopping for Sunday.  Sunday morning I'll cook the vegan stew....warm up the gumbo....cook some rice and then Sunday afternoon will be Pat DiNizio.  When that is over I imagine I will collapse.

2.  Custard Cup opens for the season today.  Yes.

3.  Yesterday morning Ernie called me at work and asked if I was busy.  I sighed and told him I would be happy to take a break from my epic battle with Word's autoformat and talk to him.   He told me to come to the back door of where I work and I did...only to find him standing there with flowers in his hand.  I kind of laughed and asked what I did to deserve that.  He wiped his eyes and said that after he got the boys off to school and I left for work he'd sat down with a cup of coffee and put the TV on.  He ended up watching the movie Up....and the love story was so sweet that when the wife died he started thinking about me....so he showed up with flowers.  He really is my heart.

4.  Last night Owen did his second round of participating in a research study.  He was very proud of this and earned about $25 for the two sessions.  It was fun for him----they asked him questions about what video games he played and then he would watch a video screen and say what he remembered, etc.  I believe the research has to do with learning differences between hearing and deaf children.  The women running it were charming and they said they need LOTS more kids so I thought I would pass this along.  I believe the age range is 6-13.  If anyone is interested you can reach them at dyelabuiuc at gmail.com.

5. Yesterday, also at work, my colleague Nancy was going through her iPhoto getting it organized and for some unknown reason came across this video and Ernie, the boys and I sitting at Fries and Peanuts.  Evidently Owen was making a video....  It's not terribly flattering of me but the one Mom glare I give is pretty damn funny.  This is a true moment of family life....and Leo looks so little with his missing front teeth....

6.  Seth Fein gives a smart write up of Don Gerard and his candidacy over at Smile Politely today.  The title really sums it up....Voting for Culture in Champaign.

7.  And with that....I'm off to work.....
