Random Notes from the Sandwich Life

1.  I made a damned good dinner last night.  While the boys and Jair played Ghost in the Graveyard outside I stared at a cut up chicken on the kitchen counter, trying to figure out what to do with it....and feeling uninspired.  I ended up browning it all in a dutch oven, then taking it out and dumping in a big can of tomatoes, a little tin of anchovies and about a cup of green olives.  I added a little salt (not much because the anchovies and olives were salty), black pepper, red pepper flakes, oregano and several cups of chicken stock.  I cooked it for a bit then added the chicken pieces back in and simmered them until they were done.  I removed them and cooked the sauce a bit more to thicken it up.  While I did that I added some broccoli spears to it and then ended up serving it all over baked brown rice.  It wasn't the most beautiful dish and I was too hungry to take a picture but I was really pleased with it....I'll definitely make it again.  I think the anchovies and olives added a nice brininess to the whole thing.

2.  In other notes.....well, I sent a letter to the editor to the News-Gazette and I spoke to a reporter about the Health Alliance issue.  I feel my father grinning when I do these things.  Here we are in the benefit choice period for state employees but WHOOPS there's no choice to be made.  I pray things will work out.

3.  Here's another version of Ernie's favorite Eric Brace song.  Gotta figure out when these guys can come play.....

 4.  Elizabeth Cook and Tim Carroll are going to play the Rosebowl in Urbana in July.  How cool is that?  Unfortunately we're not going to around.  Damn.

5.  The woman with whom we worked to book Phil Lee sent us a couple cds of other artists she books.  When I got them I held them up in the air and yelled to Ernie, "Do you know what these are?"  And then we both screamed in unison, "PROMOS!"  When you spend a couple of decades working in record stores....going off the promo wagon is cold, cold, cold indeed.  There's so much good music out there though.  I must say I am loving both cds she sent----R. B. Morris and Marshall Chapman....  And of course our friend Van sent us a bunch of stuff---I'm particularly liking the Rod Pictott and Amanda Shires...and the Jon Byrd...and...and....and....

6.  And last but not least.....a rare shot of at least PART of Leo's face.  And he appears to be.....smiling.  Not the best picture but because of its extreme rarity I will go ahead and post it....  Please admire.
