Thursday Random Notes from the Sandwich Life
1. O.k....I'm feeling more cheerful. It won't go down as one of my favorite weeks but I'm getting through it. It helps that my beloved Jimmie Dale Gilmore's new album came out yesterday. Are you LISTENING Ernie? Any guesses on whether I could find it locally or shall I just order it? Ahhhhh....few people make me as happy as Jimmie Dale Gilmore.....
2. I gotta say.....it really never occurred to me that I might have a child who wouldn't put the toilet seat back down. Just really never occurred to me. Of course, honestly it never occured to me that I could have boys. It just seemed so.....unlikely. I mean....I'M a girl. I know that doesn't make sense but that's how it seemed to me. Of course I've come around on that and believe that I was definitely made to have two sons, well, my particular two anyway. Sometimes when I walk by the sea of pink that is the girls' clothes at Target or someplace I'll just think how glad I am not to have to deal with that. But even once I accepted that we really managed to create two boys, two WONDERFUL boys.....I STILL really thought they'd put the toilet seat down. Huh.
3. The boys have started a swear jar and they seem to think they're going to make their fortune this way. They very well might. So far I have $1 in and Ernie has $2.
4. Owen's newest obsession is bidding on Batman Hot Toys....ummm.....action figures on eBay. The problem is that these things go for like $500 so his little bids made up of a couple of weeks of allowance and some sort of commitment from his brother....well he ALWAYS gets outbid.... And it breaks his heart everytime...... Man life is hard.
5. When I got home last night Ernie told me the boys were upstairs and that I should go see what Leo had built. Leo's favorite band is Pendulum. Well, apparently, it's the ONLY band he likes....and when Leo, like his mother, likes something....he REALLY, REALLY likes it. The picture doesn't really do it justice but in the midst of the Lego Star Wars base set up he constructed a concert hall with Pendulum live in concert. This included the spot where you get searched and have to get rid of metal things (how does my baby know these things?), bathrooms, a bar to the side and of course the stage. He explained who was who---evidently somebody from Prodigy was there as well. He had his mp3 player hooked up and had built speaker stands for the earbuds and had them on the stage....so you could hear them as they played. As he pointed out to me, even Darth Vader was having a good time.... Personally, all bias aside of course, I thought it was brilliant. Man I love my sweet peas.
6. O.k., so we all know I've already been described by my beloved Smile Politely as "of a certain age." So at the farmers' market the other day we bought a stewing hen from Triple S. I'm not sure exactly what I'm doing with it but I started simmering it on top of the stove. Owen got excited at the sight of chicken and asked me when it would be done. I told him it would take awhile and went on to explain what a stewing hen is, "it's a chicken that's much older...." and before I got any further he said, "like you Mom?" Sigh. Yes, I am a stewing hen.
7. Yesterday....when I was feeling blue I made myself go through old pictures of the boys. It cheered me up immensely. Perhaps like all parents I sometimes feel that I'm not doing my best by them, maybe not pushing either me or them enough. I don't know. I do know I have wonderful boys though.
8. Tonight we are getting together with our friends Ann and Bob. Thank GOD. It's been too long. This morning Ernie told me if he was particularly goofy it was just because he was looking forward to it so much. In his words, it makes him feel "buoyant." If I didn't already love Ann and Bob I would just because they make my baby feel buoyant....
