Government Cheese, Tommy Womack and Me
I would have loved to be at one of the recent Government Cheese anniversary shows.
I kind of came to Government Cheese roundabout. I'd heard OF them in the 80's and 90's as I spent a hell of a lot of time in record stores (RIP) back then. Somehow though, I never heard them, much less saw them. It's a shame because they seem to have a lot of the loves and influences that we had. It turns out that Ernie had a couple of Tommy Womack solo albums promos...but hell he had millions of promos at that point so I never heard those either. I gotta admit that it was just a couple of years ago that I heard "Alpha Male and the Canine Mystery Blood" on one of Kristi Rose's radio shows. And I immediately trotted off to youtube to explore. Ernie went and dug out the only promo he could find, Stubborn, and I fell hard.
I started trying to listen to his other stuff, I bought his book Cheese Chronicles (one of the realest, funniest and most wistful stories of rock and roll you will EVER read) and listened to Stubborn, trying to figure out what the story is behind "They All Came Back For More" because for whatever reason it cuts through my gut. And I just wanted to snuggle into the deceptively simple lyrics of "The Urge to Call." So I kept listening.... Than I got his 2007, dare I say it? masterpiece.... There, I Said It. Oh man yes.....
And now he's going to be in our living room in less than two weeks. Friday, September 16, 2011. Consider yourself invited. I REALLY want a good crowd for him so PLEASE don't be shy. Head on over to facebook, or email me, to rsvp if you can. $20 in advance, $25 day of show. You can pay via PayPal with the link on the top right of this page.
He's got a new album coming pretty soon I believe and I can't wait. This is gonna be a good one.....
