A Quiet Day

Ernie and Owen and I went to a visitation last night for a friend's daughter.  It stayed with me all night.  My heart breaks for them.  I hadn't asked the guys to go with us as I don't think they had ever officially met our friends.  Owen, however, asked if he could go with us because he thought it was very sad and wanted to let them know he was sorry.  He also got a new shirt for the occasions and wore a tie.  I love that boy.  I didn't know my friend's daughter but she was beautiful and young, with a young daughter of her own, and when we looked at all the pictures, her spirit seemed to shine through.  Such loss, such sadness.

I was kind of out of sorts the whole afternoon and evening thinking about my friends (and it didn't help when Owen criticized the way I laugh...damn kids can be little jerks). I even had Ernie take me to Meijer's so we could buy produce because that usually makes me damn happy.  It helped a bit.  I bought okra....I'm going to try to convince Ernie that it's good....some Meyer lemons, some pretty red kale, some swiss chard, some pecans, some dried mushrooms and some sugar snap peas.

When we got home after the visitation I ended up throwing some chicken and a few little potatoes in my beautiful Le Creuset, browned it a bit and then covered it.  When it came out I pulled the chicken out and added a little leftover honey/sriacha sauce and cooked it all down, threw in the kale and wilted it for the last few minutes.  Lovely, lovely meal.  The honey/sriacha was totally mellowed by the gorgeous pan drippings.  I LOVE my Le Creuset.  We watched a Disney movie with Owen and both boys went to bed pretty early.  Ernie and I watched a few Portlandia's and then I headed up to bed.  A quiet night.
