Am I REALLY an Isolated, Impatient Individual with Low Self-Esteem?

A few weeks ago I started noticing calls on my cell from a number I didn't know in St. Louis. They never left a message. We had just gone through being scared of calls we were getting from the people that had financed our furnace/air conditioner. They were calling when we were in Clemson and it kept being at times we couldn't (or weren't up for) taking their call. We started panicking that somehow we still owed more money on it...we finally called back and they said we had overpaid by some amount like 50 cents. They also said they didn't know why we were being called. Geesh. Whatever. Anyway, this other number from St. Louis never left a message. A couple of times I answered it and there would just be dead air. I tried waiting a minute----sometimes automated calls take a minute to connect....but nothing. It started to freak me out a bit...one day they called six times. I tried reverse directories but  got nowhere without offering up some $. The other morning they called at work and my friend Nancy said, "Oh for god's sake give me the number, I'll call them." Huh...never thought of that. You know me and phones. She called the number and they answered Everest College. She asked them if they were in St. Louis and they asked her where she was. She countered, asking again and they said something to the effect of, "Yeah, whatever."

I looked up Everest College and it turns out to be a diploma mill with "Colleges" all over the country. They are actually owned by Corinthian Colleges. They have been sued for deceptive marketing.

According to Harris’ complaint, CCI’s predatory marketing efforts specifically target vulnerable, low-income job seekers and single parents who have annual incomes near the federal poverty line. In internal company documents obtained by the Department of Justice, CCI describes its target demographic as “isolated,” “impatient,” individuals with “low self-esteem,” who have “few people in their lives who care about them” and who are “stuck” and “unable to see and plan well for future.”

What the hell? 

I blocked their number and considered it resolved. The next morning I got a call from a similar number----just a digit or two off. Sigh. I blocked that one too.

Just now? I got a call from the first number that I thought I had blocked. I answered and waited....nothing.

What's up? Anyone have insight?
