Watching Storms
I crawled into bed last night but before I started to read I checked the weather radar. It looked as though the edge of the storm was honing in on us so I hopped back out of bed and rallied the troops. We went outside to watch the sky flicker with the lightning in the distance. The air was milkshake-thick and dead, dead still, but as we sat there it began to cool off and a little breeze picked up. We chatted as the air got cooler and cooler. We began to feel a bit of drizzle and then suddenly the winds hit fast and hard. We scurried to the porch and after another few minutes went inside. As we sat in the living room talking the lights suddenly went off. Ernie lit some candles but I was getting tired so I went upstairs to bed and drifted off to sleep. Before long however, there were the sounds of Ameren trucks, which eventually took up residence right in front of us and worked through the night. I certainly couldn't begrudge them since they were working fix our power but damn.....every time I'd drift off, they'd adjust the lift on the truck, or the workers would start talking to each other, or I'd see the light of their flashlights darting around. I probably slept more than I think I did but Lord I am tired today. Luckily the power came back on before I left for work so I could have a little coffeemilk. Ernie and Owen slept like little blond rocks but Leo and I are bleary, bleary, bleary. There's a big branch down in the field next to us, just the tips of it hit our fence luckily and a much bigger part of a tree down a little ways down the street.
There are few things as nice as sitting and watching a storm come in with my sweet peas.
Don't forget we have Irene Kelley coming on August 15....there's a lot of summer between then and now but do put it on your calendar!
