Random Food and Music Notes from the Sandwich Life

1. The other day I had a leftover smoked chicken carcass so I threw it in a pot with some dried red beans and cooked it. When it was done I wondered what the hell I was going to do with it all. I decided on chili as I hadn't made any in eons. I made a good old fashioned plain, probably midwestern, chili. I added a couple of tablespoons of some Penzey's chili powder. There wasn't as much as I'd like so I added a couple of tablespoons of some ground cumin, oregano and a bit of smoked paprika and cayenne. Some of our pepper plants are coming along nicely in the garden so I added several jalopenos and poblanos, as well as onion and garlic of course. I added some leftover things such as some corn, etc. and then browned ground turkey, as well as tomatoes and tomato paste. It tasted ridiculously good. Sometimes simple things are so wonderful. Ernie made a skillet of cornbread which Owen loved so much that he chortled as he ate it. He chortled.

2. Last night almost topped it though. Fresh corn on the cob, some snow peas and sweet little golden cherry tomatoes (from the garden) sauteed together, some sliced Japanese cucumber (from our garden---Owen planted them so he was very proud) and a whole chicken done on the grill. Perfect plate of summer....such beautiful colors....

3. Yesterday my boss took us out to lunch at the new Korean barbecue place in Urbana, Masijta Grill. I'd had some when I was at our friends Amy and Mark's wedding shower but hadn't been to the restaurant proper. It was WONDERFUL! I had the dolsat bibambop with bulgogi....rice and vegetables, marinated beef, with an egg on top, all served in a hot stone bowl....absolutely wonderful! It was quite nice inside, they serve beer and wine, and there is outdoor seating as well. I'm excited to try some more. Oh, and they have Korean fried chicken too....

4. On a different note, Peter Case has started a Kickstarter. There are tons of Kickstarters and you can't support all that you want to, or at least we certainly can't. Some are special though and to us, Peter Case is one of those. First album in five years folks!!

5. And for no reason at all, except for the pleasure of it, some pictures from last week's show....(all stolen from David's facebook page...if anybody minds them here just yell).
