The Final Day of the 2015 Spring Break Tax Refund Southern Indiana Tour
At the New Harmony Inn we woke in the night to the sounds of a thunderstorm. Our 70 degree weather that had made it so pleasant to sit outside watching the swans was gone. We tumbled out of bed come morning and headed off to the Main Cafe, on Main Street needless to say. Man.....oh so highly recommended. I had my standard diner breakfast---two eggs over easy, sausage, hash browns and toast (rye if they have it and extra points for seeded rye). This was not a rye bread kind of place but it was outstanding. The difference between this breakfast and the one the day before was monumental. A perfect over easy egg is not the easiest thing to do...these were perfection. Leo proclaimed his pancakes to be fantastic ("but not as good as yours Dad"); they were things of beauty---and Owen loved his omelet. On top of that the most gorgeous tin ceilings and walls you can imagine---hidden only a bit by the Kiwanis banners.
There are golf cart rentals available all over town. Owen went back and forth between making fun of them and desperately wanting to rent one. The night before we thought we might go ahead and rent one in the morning (especially as my knee was precluding a lot of walking) but after waking up to the rain it just didn't seem quite as appealing. We drove around a bit and stopped at Philip Johnson's Roofless Church. Spectacular even in the gloom.
We wandered a little bit more, looking at buildings, walking one of the the labyrinths before deciding to slowly wend our way back to C-U.
On the way home we paused to drive through a small town or two, stopping just once at an antique shop. Much like the one we skipped in West Baden which advertised itself as Gun, Fireworks & Antiques, this one was a U-Haul rental place, antiques, and also had a few coolers and smoked meats. It was interesting.
We paused in Greenup, Illinois because I remembered going to an antique mall or two a few years back. Sadly they were all closed up. It's a different era for antique shops and malls these days. In fact, this weekend was the first time I was ever in an antique shop that didn't take checks. I was so surprised. I admit we don't write checks for much these days....but it still took me aback. Of course I was buying something from the 1980s in an antique shop so there you go!
All that was left of this shop was its sign and beautiful stone building....
As we drove up route 130 all the way to Urbana, the land became flatter and flatter, and with that, the Great 2015 Spring Break Tax Refund Southern Indiana Tour came to an end. I gotta say, I think a good time was had by all. I love spending time like this with my sweet peas.
