Moments to Savor

The last few days have been out of the ordinary and leave me feeling off kilter, but off kilter in a good way. On Thursday we heard that the Supreme Court had held up the Affordable Care Act and were pleased and happy. I was planning to take Friday off work but at the last minute had to go in to meet a contractor at 8:15. Eh. I dragged Ernie with me and when I was done he took me out to breakfast. We felt like going somewhere where we felt out of town so headed up to Urbana Garden by the interstate, complete with the big EAT sign. We sat in a corner booth, ate our favorite kind of diner breakfasts...he with his standard of two eggs over easy, sausage, hash browns and wheat toast, me with corned beef hash, two eggs over easy, hash browns and rye toast. We are nothing if not predictable...although sometimes I get sausage instead of  corned beef hash. We ate and talked and watched the rain pour straight down outside the windows.

I hadn't been able to sleep at all the night before so when we got home I took a late morning nap. It felt wonderfully decadent. I woke up, drank a bit of iced tea and picked up my iPad, only to find the Supreme Court ruling on marriage all over the internet. I felt giddy. I told Owen the news and he was thrilled, running off to tell his father. I called up to Leo in his room. He yelled, "What?" in his newly deep voice. I told him to come to the landing for a minute. When I told him the news. He let out a big sigh and then put his fist in the air, saying "FINALLY!" All I could do was think how much I love those boys.

That evening we had our beloved Sue and Kent over for pancake night. Taco pancakes were made folks....and we ended the evening with hysterical laughter and root beer floats. A good day.

Saturday I had to go in to work for awhile in the afternoon but in the morning I just curled up, read the news and did a bit of nothing. Then I decided to listen to Obama's eulogy of the Reverend Clementa Pinckney. I had heard a bit, particularly of him singing Amazing Grace the day before, but hadn't listened to it all. If you have not watched the entire thing I urge you to do so. Seriously....please do....just take the time and listen to it all.

He starts at about 1:20:20 in this video. There is a more edited version but I liked watching him directly after he finished as well...which this video shoes. He finishes at about at 2:00:00. I find myself wanting to watch it again like a song that hits me in the heart. Very powerful.

What an emotional couple of days for this country. Moments to savor, the every day moments of our family as well as the celebration and the sadness of our country. I feel quiet and thankful today.
