Questioning and Loving and Olney
It's been a busy week so I'm behind on writing. Last weekend was a whirlwind, at least for someone who likes to stay home a lot! I met our dear friends Boo and Doug for an Esquire Friday night dinner. Lord but I love them. Saturday I puttered in the morning and then went into work for the afternoon. Then I made an experimental vegetable dish for dinner at Ann and Bob's. Why I think I should experiment on other people I don't know. I roasted two spaghetti squash and then mixed it with ricotta, garlic and sage and baked it. It was good but I think the ricotta overwhelmed it a bit. The basic flavors were nice though. I'd probably like it better just sauteed in some olive oil with the garlic and sage. Live and learn....
Dinner that night was with Ann, Bob, Sophie, Owen (we gave the boys the option and Leo declined), David Olney and his wife. You know how it is when you love someone and you don't know their spouse and when you meet them, you sometimes think "REALLY?" Well this was one of those times when you meet the spouse and you think, "Ohhhh, yes, yes, yes, this makes perfect sense!" She was utterly lovely and of course you all know how I feel about everybody else in the room.
By all rights I should hate Ann. She's so GOOD at things. She is so graceful about having people over. Dinner was perfect, the house was perfect but it didn't feel perfect, it just felt right....right and comfortable and like home. It's a very special talent she has. An utterly delightful evening, one I would happily relive and lord knows one can't say that about everything.
Sunday morning we went to the 10:45 Palm Sunday service. I said it last year and I say it again....utterly moving and powerful experience. The stark power of the words of the readings followed directly by David's songs gives extraordinary light to both. I can't say I'm a believer. I'm a questioner who deeply respects the believers. It was a very special morning.
Afterward we headed home for a bit, then gathered Owen up and went back for the 3:00 concert. Best version I think I've ever heard of Little Mustang segueing into Deeper Well complete with Death Shall Have No Dominion by Dylan Thomas. Good Lord. I could not love David Olney more.
Thanks David, and Ann and Bob, for making Easter very special for this questioner. I love you all.
Thanks to Erich Adickes of Adickes Creative Services for the use of his photos!
Oh, and high marks for the jacket David. Very nice. Speaking of which....best comment on facebook from Mary King: "Jonathan just commented on how much he liked David Olney's burgundy jacket today, since it was "very Third Doctor." Then it hit me: David Olney is a Time Lord. It's the only logical conclusion." Heh.
David talking to two of my favorite people, Howard and Lee Bernstein, that drove a long way for this show....I love them so!
