Random Christmas Eve Notes
1. The last day has been constant ice and sleet and rain. Our entertainment in the middle of the night and this morning has been watching trucks get stuck on the ice in front of our house trying to go up the very slight rise toward the park.
Rain sometimes makes us worry though between the basement flooding and the occasional leaks we've had. So Ernie was sitting in the media room and saw something drop from the ceiling. "oh nooooo, a leak," he figured. He stood up to check and saw little white dots on the ceiling. They fell off as he touched them and didn't seem wet however. hmmmm. He asked Owen if he knew anything about them and of COURSE Owen said no. A few minutes later however Owen confessed that it was flour----he'd been throwing flour at the ceiling to make clouds. It is a testament to the disaster that room is that we hadn't noticed flour anywhere else....
2. One of us isn't going to make it....it's either Owen or me. He SO desperately wants to open presents that he alternates between being foul and then trying to make up for it by saying, "sorry about crying and yelling and maybe we don't even have to open a present tonight---we can just wait because Christmas isn't about presents---it's about being together." I don't know which one of us will survive.
3. My sweet Leo still has a fever today. Of course he refuses to take tylenol so we can't get it down either. Stubborn beast. I hope he feels better tomorrow. He took a nap during the day yesterday and then went to bed at 7:00 and didn't even read. My baby.
4. Ernie and just watched Miracle on 34th Street. Ernie can recite virtually every line of dialogue in the thing. I just moan periodically when Edmund Gwenn looks particularly beautiful as Santa Claus.....and oh MAN do I want shoulder pads to come back. One of our favorite lines is when Maureen O'Hara is castigating John Payne for quitting his law firm and starting his own and she asks him, "what kind of clients will you get?" And he says something to the effect of, "probably people like Kris who are being bullied. That's the only fun in law anyway." And then we both grin and look at each other and Ernie says, "there's your Dad...." That WAS the kind of lawyer my father was....
5. Curried almonds just out of the oven....
