A Few More Random Notes....
1. Ernie just stuck his head out of the kitchen where he is making chocolate chip cookies by request because Leo with the big eyes told him he made the best chocolate chip cookies in the WHOLE wide world. He looked at me and said, "it's hard to listen to the Replacements with iCarly in the background...."
2. I started the morning out by closing my skirt in the front door as I left and then couldn’t find the front door key to release myself. I finally did so I could let go of the visions of having to take my skirt off and trot around to the back door.
3. I gotta admit…..we are really struggling right now. I’m trying to convince Ernie that this might be a time to consider a mild antidepressant but he is adamantly opposed. Which I understand…. I just feel so helpless to comfort him….and I guess he feels the same.
4. We are looking ahead and trying to plan some things to enjoy. I’ve been in touch with Amy Rigby to see if she and Wreckless Eric could play a house concert for us when they’re in this country in the summer. Hopefully that will work out. Secondly…..I’m thinking about flinging budgetary caution to the wind and going to Maine this summer. I started looking at rental cottages that are further northeast than where we usually go. They are much cheaper and it’s only about an additional 4-5 hours drive. I’m looking at Lubec, Maine---- the most easternmost town in the United States. I think it would really be beautiful and it might be nice to go someplace new….
5. Tonight Ernie was getting cross and I was trying to explain to Owen----saying, “Daddy has just had a hard day honey” but he put his hand out and stopped me, saying, “oh, he’s just sad about the cancer in his bones Mom.” All I could do was hug him and kiss him and try not to cry.
6. This video is for my friend Bob. I first head this song on Emmylou Harris’ Cowgirl's Prayer album. I think it was the first time I had heard of David Olney because I immediately thought, “who the hell wrote this song.” It was not long after that that I fell madly in love with Olney’s High Wide and Lonesome album. Anyway….this song fascinates us and sometimes makes us weep although God knows I’m not up to explaining that.
7. I couldn’t decide what to have for dinner tonight. I finally went for one of my favorite comfort foods: hash. Sweet potato hash with smoked salmon, onions and spinach. At the end I threw a poached egg on top and a bit of hot sauce. I followed it with possibly the best cupcake in America. Bless you Laura!
8. Oh….and one last thing. Tonight Owen was reading before bed and I said, “Man Owen, you are doing such a great job reading” and he stuck his head out from behind the book and cheerfully said, “well, DUH, I mean I’m reading a non-fiction chapter book about a president, so YES I think I’m reading really well.” Then he smiled at me and went back to reading about George Washington. The non-fiction thing seems to make him very proud.
