Random Notes from the Sandwich Life

1.  This morning I was in the bathroom when I heard a knock at the door and then, "what are you doing in there Mommy?"   I said, "I'm going to the bathroom."  Long pause and then, "uh, o.k."

Thanks Owen.....I'm glad it's o.k. with you.

2.  Got home from work the other night and poked through the day's mail on the dining room table.  There was a packet of information from Carle Clinic addressed to Judi saying 'welcome to Carle Clinic' and here's a first aid kit for you.'  Huh.  Too bad she didn't get that first aid kit before she died, huh?  She started seeing doctors at Carle in November and died in February.  So....to get a little welcome kit coming up on six months after she died....well....it just kind of pissed me off.  Of course this is the organization that seems to keep billing me for things I've already paid.  Well...maybe that's Carle Hospital, not Carle Clinic....I don't know.  Either way....shouldn't they fucking KNOW she's dead?  She doesn't need a damn first aid kit.

3.  On a brighter note we had a lovely evening last night.  I picked my mother up after work and drove her over to our house.  Found that Ernie had carted much of the fallen tree away and set the outside table and had a bottle of white wine waiting for us.  The weather was perfect.  I made some sort of orzo/squash/zucchini/pesto/mozzarella thing, some nice wild shrimp, slices of cucumber and our wonderful Amish Watermelon tomatoes.  Then we sat around and watched the kids running around the field.  Owen insisted we start a fire so Ernie obligingly did and Owen and Ricky grilled some hot dogs over the fire.  So Mom and I moved over to the fire, our neighbor Dave came and sat with us and we all watched Leo and Owen Ricky playing a combination of hide and seek and freeze tag.  They took breaks for ice cream sandwiches and glasses of ice water from my red aluminum pitcher....  I wish I had a picture of them sitting on the step eating and drinking as it got dark but sometimes you have to just let it go and put it in your memory.....  I think my mother had a really good time....as we did....

4.  I let the boys run around and play too late because these summer evenings are becoming bittersweet with school and earlier bedtimes looming.  Ernie and I were inside watching the news when Owen appeared and flopped on the daybed, chatting about what a nice evening it was.  I admired his sweaty face and dirty feet and said something to him only to be met with silence.....I don't know if I've ever seen him fall asleep so quickly.....he was out though....laying on his back with his  hands clasped on his stomach, with that sun kissed glow his skin has these days....what a sweet pea.

5.  Leo came in, hugged and kissed me and demanded that his father put him to bed.  Nothing better in this world than a happy Leo.

6.  For some reason my shoulders feel lighter of late.

7.  Ian Hunter singing Saturday Gigs.....
