So, one up for Urbana, no? But by the same token I've been somewhat appalled by the tone taken by Laurel Prussing and Mike Monson in Smile Politely's write up of the Olympian Drive issue. I've been so irritated that I've now left two comments...not like me. It's not their statement of facts, or plans, that gets me-----it's the tone and lack of respect. No matter how you feel about an opponent on an issue to refuse to use her name and insist on only calling her 'goat lady' really reflects far more on her than her opponent. And Monson's theory that an interviewer should tell the interviewee when their answer isn't very good and suggest they get some help on it.....well, it just kind of tickled me.
He says,
Generally, when you interview someone on March 11 for an article that’sgoing to appear a month later, it’s a good idea to check back with yoursource, particularly on a fluid issue, shortly before publication. Andif an answer appears somewhat thin, you might mention that to theofficial and ask if they have anything else to add, or if they want tocheck with a department head, to get more specific answers.
I’m not sure how many more interviews Anna is going to get if shecontinues to use the technique of refuting and ridiculing the officialafter every answer.
First point---o.k. The second point---saying that if their answer sounds thin they should ask if they want to check with someone....well, that just cracks me up. And I gotta say, Anna did refute Prussing's answers but ridicule? No. Not agreeing and saying why----how is that ridicule? Very disappointing and as I said in my comment.....that's something that colors longterm impressions, not just single issues.
Ehhhhh.
