"Did you and Daddy have sex before you got married?"

The other night Owen and Ernie and I were watching an episode of Mad Men.  I know, I know...probably inappropriate for an 8 year old but he always alerts us when he thinks there's something he shouldn't be seeing and then he covers his eyes if necessary and asks questions as needed.  It's actually led to some good converations about men and women but some are easier than others.

He keeps up a running commentary which I try to ignore but my ears perked up when he said, "uh, I think they're going to have sex."  To which I replied, "looks like it" as the camera cut away.  They he leaned over and paused the laptop before asking, "by the way, did you guys have sex before you were married?"

Yes. That's what he asked.

Ernie did one of his patented 'shrink into the couch cushions so it will seem like I'm not involved and then you can ask your mother' moves and I stuttered a bit, cast my eyes to the ceiling looking for suggestions and finally said, "well, yes we did honey.....but we made sure we really loved each other a lot first."

Well?

I could have lied but that boy is DAMN smart and he would have figured out I was lying so I figure I'm better off being honest.  I want him to count on my honestly but geesh.

God help me when he starts asking about drugs.
