Crying with Eddie and the Hot Rods
Why does the Eddie and the Hot Rods' song "Do Anything You Wanna Do" always make me want to cry? The early versions with their young faces do it to me as well as the recent ones with the older version of the band. The covers do it to me. I swear....I can't explain it. Have I done everything I wanna do? Well hell, no....but if anything, I've done MORE of what I wanna do than was probably good for me. Perhaps if I had more money there are a few more things I'd 'wanna do'...but let's face it...the fact that I don't have more money is because I DID do what I wanted to do. So why does this song get to me? A million years after I saw Eddie and the Hot Rods singing it at Mabel's? I don't know. There's something about the yearning in this song that brings me to tears when I listen to it though. And sometimes it makes me think of the yearning my boys will have in their life and that makes me cry a little too.
Owen came home from a birthday party in tears today because some kid had said mean things to him. We had called home because we thought Leo might be home early and instead we found a tearful, crying Owen. We raced (well, kind of) back home to him and I hugged him and kissed him and then his friend came over to check on him (bless you Jair) and Owen let himself be coaxed back----with Ernie there for support. Ernie, who can be--- honestly kind of amusingly mean to kids that he thinks have affronted his precious ones----got the kid to apologize and came back home. Everything was better and both boys came home happy. Why do somehow think our babies should be able to avoid the same hurt feelings we have had in life? Sigh.
I have a feeling Leo's coming down with something....and with him up in bed reading and thinking about Owen with his hurt feelings....I don't know. I've been sitting here playing different versions of the song (Michael Monroe anybody? Manfred Mann anybody?) while I made marinara sauce for Owen's linguine. Then somehow bowls got spilled, people were upset, someone tried to start a fire and I had to start another batch of linguine. We had a confusing discussion about why the grapes didn't taste good today and for a moment Ernie and I thought Leo had eaten a grape and we screamed with delight and then for some reason Ernie offended the guys so I cheerfully told them to hit him and then he started chasing Owen throughout the house while Leo smiled and worked on Lego City and I started playing "Do Anything You Wanna Do" again.
I'm gonna break out of the city
Leave the people here behind
Searching for adventure
It's the kind of life to find
Tired of doing day jobs
With no thanks for what I do
I know I must be someone
Now I'm gonna find out who
Why don't you ask them what they expect from you ?
Why don't you tell them what you're gonna do
You get so lonely, maybe it's better that way
It ain't you only, you got something to say
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do
I don't need no politicians to tell me things I shouldn't be
Neither no opticians to tell me what I oughta see
No-one tells you nothing even when you know they know
They tell you what you should be
They don't like to see you grow
Why don't you ask them what they expect from you ?
Why don't you tell them what you're gonna do
You get so lonely, maybe it's better that way
It ain't you only, you got something to say
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do
I'm gonna break out of the city
Leave the people here behind
Searching for adventure

With no thanks for what I do
I know I must be someone

Why don't you tell them what you're gonna do
