Random Notes from the Sandwich Life

1.  I called home from work yesterday.  Owen answered the phone and I said hi to him and then asked him if his Dad was there.  He said he was.  I waited.  He asked me if there was anything else.  I said no.  He hung up.  I guess he thought I was just checking to see if Ernie was home.  I called back and told him I needed to TALK to Daddy and he said, "I KNEW it....that's why I ASKED you if there was anything else!.

2.  My favorite side dish/leftovers for lunch dish of late is simply kale and chickpeas and garlic.  Last night we threw a whole chicken in the oven at 500 degrees.  It does smoke up the house a bit but it makes for the best roast chicken.  I deglazed the roasting pan and poured it into a saute pan.  Browned a can of chickpeas (rinsed them off first) then tossed in a bunch of slivered kale and a chopped clove of garlic and tossed it until the kale was wilted.  It really outshone the roast chicken which was pretty damn good itself!  And as I said, the leftovers make for a perfect lunch the next day.  In fact I made a double batch of it last night (two cans of chickpeas, two bunches of kale) so we'd have more leftovers.

3.  It was so nice out yesterday that I called home in the middle of the afternoon again.  Leo answered and I asked him if any daffodils were blooming in the front yard.  He said he didn't know and asked what they looked like.  I described them and he was game....went out into the yard, asked a few more questions and then triumphantly announced that they were!  I love my sweet pea.

4.  Owen doesn't like to close the bathroom door so we've gotten used to walking by seeing him do everything, well everything one does in the bathroom.  Last night I was walking by into the kitchen and as he was wiping his little butt he yelled, "hey Mom, why do you think God created us?"  I stopped, looked at him and slowly said, "I don't know honey, I really don't know" because well, hell....I don't.  He paused, wiped his butt again, shrugged and said, "maybe he was lonely and wanted some company."  And I said, "maybe he was honey, maybe he was" because all I know is that he got damned good company when he created Owen.

5.  One of my favorite Phil Lee clips...worth watching again to get in the mood for next Friday.  Last night I had a dream that it was the day before the house concert and I hadn't taken the 10lb pork loin out of the freezer to thaw yet and we didn't have any sound set up....then it segued into a dream about work and hotels and youtube videos.  I have been having interesting dreams of late.  The other night I was flying down a highway that was filled with all sorts of gothic architecture and then there was pattern glass involved and then this ghost said that even though I didn't realize it I was representing my sister Debbie but then my sister Judi showed up and there was only room for Debbie and me to fit through the gothic arches.  Lots of others too.  When I recounted one to Owen after he woke me up one morning he listened, shook his head and said, "I'm not saying you didn't dream that Mom, but it sounds a little too complicated for a dream."

Anyway....here's some Phil Lee and Tom Mason....
