Accidents Happen.....and Then Again
Ernie and I went out and ran errands on Saturday afternoon because I decided that if I had a new bath mat that my life would be exponentially better. Yeah, I know. So after a few somewhat unfulfilling purchases (one of which was a new bath mat....I like it....Owen thinks it is ridiculously small and he might be right) Ernie took me out for a drink.
As we sat mulling over our lives the phone rang. I answered and Owen's voice hesitantly said, "Uh Mom....I kinda had a small accident." This should be interesting I thought given that he didn't sounds as though there was blood or something else dire involved....."what kind of accident?"
"Well.....remember that can of pop that was sitting in the kitchen?" I had burrowed to the back of the refrigerator the previous day looking for miso and had unearthed a can of pop left over from a house concert. I assured him that I remembered the can of pop. "Welllll, I was cutting some drawings out of my notebook with scissors....and I kind of leaned over with the scissors and they somehow went INTO the can of pop. And I guess it had been shaken up in the morning....and I didn't know it would STILL be shaken up."
I rolled my eyes and told him to clean it up---that it could be sticky. "Well, I'm trying but I can't reach the ceiling."
O.k....at that point I could not help myself and I started giggling. He got a little offended so I quickly said, "I'm NOT laughing at you Owen." He correctly replied, "Mom, you most certainly ARE laughing at me but that's HOW it happened." After a little more indignation counterbalanced with copious apologies he hung up.
When we got home he was industriously wiping down the cupboards. We asked him if he could re-enact the part where he just leaned over and the scissors accidentally pierced the pop can but he just looked at us mournfully and said, "You GUYS...that's HOW it happened" until we left him alone.
I looked at the spatters on the ceiling and shrugged. The kitchen really needs to be painted anyway....and besides....what's a boy to do when he leans over and his scissors take on a life of their own?
And in honor of that can of pop.....Wreckless Eric's Pop Song video....
