Random Notes from the Sandwich Life
1. We had a rogue jalapeno last night. Most of the time I don't find the jalapenos at the grocery store super hot...especially when they are kind of oversized. Last night, in theory, I needed two red jalapeno peppers for the recipe I was making. I had one absolutely enormous green jalopeno so I shrugged and started dicing it up and then made Ernie finish it because the new glass cutting board I bought is too loud. It seemed like a lot so I just used half, added it to the dressing, and washed my hands. I touched my face (luckily not my eyes) near my cheekbone and it burned like hell and turned red. I washed and washed my hands some more and waited for it to fade. JHC it was hot. I started wondering how hot the dressing was going to be so I went and strained them out of it and it was STILL phenomenally hot. Where did this master pepper come from? I swear I've never had a jalapeno that hot. Even when I went to bed my face was still hot from it.
Weird.
O.k....I know that has to be one of the dullest things I've ever written but it seemed of importance to me at the time.
2. Now that summer is getting close and the it's light later in the evening, Owen often comes up when I go to bed to read and lies there a while with me. Last night he was very sleepy and he laid there quietly before murmering, "what is music to you Mom?" I thought for a minute, not sure how to answer him. Finally I said, "well, to me, music is emotion and it is energy, it's what gives me energy to get through things and helps me figure out things in life." He said, "mmm-hmmmm....I agree. Music is energy to me too." I just patted his back and watched him doze off.
3. JASON is this weekend! I can't believe how soon it is and yet STILL I don't feel inspired to clean the house. Oh well! A couple of friends and I will be making fried chicken, side dishes, desserts, appetizers, or even more fried chicken is all welcome. BYOB of course although I'll have lemonade too. Leo just sighed deeply when I told him there was a house concert.
4. I want a pink climbing rose. Any suggestions? My grandmother had a pink climbing rose...well actually I think it was her neighbor Hazel, but it grew all over my grandmother's fence. I can remember so clearly standing there with my grandma, the two of us standing on our side of the fence, Hazel on the other side, listening to them talk. I swear I can smell my grandmother's scent, kind of like a pile of just washed and dried clothes, and hear her New England accent. There were irises in that yard too that had been her mother's. We took some back to our backyard in Lisle but they didn't make it. And there were a couple of steps set into the slope that were made out of the rock that is everywhere there. I don't know why that all popped into my head right then, but as soon as I wrote 'pink climbing rose' there it was.
5. I hope Jason does this song on Saturday. Although on Saturday, if I try to think of a song to request, my mind will go totally blank. Happens every time when somebody says, "any requests?" Blank. What songs should we request from Jason?
