Time, time, time.

I swear I can feel the breeze as it rushespast me.

Yesterday I was talking to a colleague and I mentionedthat Leo will be 14 in a little over a month. She just looked at me inamazement and I nodded in agreement. It seems as though I’ve just been in myjob for a few years….but this is what Leo and Owen looked like when I started:

This October will see our 25th weddinganniversary. Can that be? We had our first house concert with Kane Welch Kaplinfor our 20th anniversary partially because I was so terrified by thereturn of Ernie’s cancer that I was afraid we wouldn’t have a 25thanniversary. And here we are. And I often feel as though it hasn’t been thatlong since we moved back down here from Chicago but I realize that as of thismonth it’s been 19 years. Nineteen years…. That’s a generation.

Wow.

I guess there’s no way to imagine time treating you thisway. Even if you think you know that it will go fast….you can't truly realize.

Sometimes I miss the chaos of little boys running around, watching bats and playing Ghost in the Graveyard and jumping into my lap. Butthen again there are new joys….the way Leo quietly and sweetly asks me, “Howwas your day at work Mom?” and listens carefully to my response. Or when Owenasks for paper and an envelope and goes upstairs to pen a letter to the schoolprincipal. Evidently there are new lunchtime dismissal rules or something and hedoesn’t think they are fair and/or efficient so he wrote a letter to herexplaining this. We didn’t get to read the letter but he assured me it was verypolite. It was addressed to Miss Sanders, our lovely principal.

God I love those boys.

Thanks to Dave Davis for the wonderful O'Kanes disc of an interview and songs from the late 80's. Listening to a younger Kieran Kane, and realizing how long we've been listening and loving him just made the whoosh all the louder.

One of my very favorite O'Kanes songs....

And of course this one too:
