There WILL Be Vegetables....Waiting for Spring and Sola Gratia Farms!
Even I, the eternal admirer of wet snow that outlines every branch, am not thrilled with this today.
Blegh.
However.....spring really will come someday and there really will be boxes of vegetables pouring out of Sola Gratia Farms before all that long. Sola Gratia is the CSA that we belong to every summer. It is run by St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Urbana. They donate 10% of their crops to Eastern Illinois Foodbank. They have literally given TONS of vegetables to the foodbank. Ernie and I are not members of St. Matthew's but we admire the church's programs and love being part of this example of community supported agriculture.
We get a half share because we like to grow some things of our own and buy at the farmers' market as well. So a half share works nicely...we always have something coming in but still get to choose to fill in where you like. If you sign up BEFORE April you can get a reduced price----$285 for a half share, $525 for a full share. We really recommend this as a way to support a great program, a way to support Eastern Illinois Foodbank, and a way to get great fresh, local vegetables on your tables every week from spring through fall.
If you are interested at all, please join us at St. Matthew's this Saturday evening. There will be lots of good food (bring something to share if you like but it's not necessary). Here's the official blurb:
Join us to learn more about Sola Gratia Farm, our mission and the Community Supported Agriculture model. Meet Clay, our new farmer, and find out how you can support and share in this season’s locally grown bounty.
Introduction to the 2014 staff will take place at 6:30pm, followed by a family-style dinner. (Bring a dish to share if you’d like).
There will be food, friends, and plenty of spring anticipation! This event is free and open to the public, so be sure to invite friends and/or neighbors who might be interested in learning more about becoming a part of the Sola Gratia community.
Hosted by Sola Gratia Farm, St. Saint Matthew Lutheran Church--Urbana Illinois and Faith in Place.
Ernie and I will be there, food in hand....hope to see you!
