And So It Goes

Back to work today. Hmmm. That went fast. A pretty quiet weekend apart from Rascal's arrival and a wedding shower for a dear friend. The shower was wonderful....joyous and beautiful....just the way it should be. The food was great too....sort of a sampler of downtown Urbana food.....pulled pork and smoked wings from Black Dog, Korean from the Korean place that just opened down the street from the Rose Bowl, pizza from Pizza M, and sausages from the Urbana Butcher. I might be forgetting something but it was all wonderful...and best of all was seeing Amy and Mark so happy and loved.

We got to sit at the best table if I do say so myself. Our beloved Roger and Ceal and Amy's mother. We definitely won the table lottery. I actually took a better picture of Ceal and Roger but this one captured that little sideways smirk she does so well that I had to choose this one.....

Normally I love to go to the cemetery and watch the Knights of Columbus and listen to the speeches on Memorial Day. Somehow this year I just didn't want to do it. People posted pictures of their loved ones on facebook...and again I just couldn't do it. Sometimes it feels too raw or personal, other times not. So yesterday we didn't go to the cemetery, we all stayed home, Ernie and Leo worked on putting up our trellis for our climbing rose, Owen watched Rascal, I read a bit and made potato salad for Ernie to have later with bratwurst. That man LOVES his potato salad. I like it with russets because they absorb everything better. I boil the potatoes whole, then pull the skin off, chunk them and drench them with a nice mustardy vinaigrette. Then later, once that's absorbed I do the classic mayo, added a few shallots, lots of hard boiled egg for Ernie and forgot the traditional chives. That was the only herb we had in our yard when I was growing up and I mostly remember it on our potato salad. I don't make traditional all-American potato salad that often but once or twice a summer I gotta do it for my guy.

Here's our trellis a little over half done. We ran short of some of the trim we needed (my faulty calculations) so couldn't finish it. There will be another horizontal lattice panel beneath the top one. It looks good though, doesn't it? Just ignore all the messy stuff behind it!

We went to bed early but it was dreadfully hot in our room. The downstairs was o.k. but the upstairs bedrooms were horrible last night. I tossed and turned, flipped the pillow over about two million times, listened to music, flopped some more. A long, long night. We all seemed a bit bleary all weekend, as well as this morning. I'm not quite sure why. The boys said we were just getting used to the hot weather again. Maybe that was it...hard to say.

And thus summer begins. Leo graduates from middle school on Friday. Owen has to go through next Monday or Tuesday. Ernie and I head off to the Cancer Center today. And so it goes.
