Ernest, Thy Name is Sucker
We've had a quiet Memorial Day weekend. Ernie and I have both been out of sorts a bit and he just hasn't felt great. So despite making a damn good succotash for my beloved Bob Deichman's birthday, we ended not making the party. I felt bad but Ernie just needed some time to hole up and when one of us has to hole up, well, the other one's got to be there. So we enjoyed Bob's succotash for him. I'm not sure it was a traditional succotash but it's what I call succotash.....edamame, sweet corn, jalapeno, cherry tomatoes and I used a bit of the good peppered bacon from Triple S, sauteed it all a bit and added a splash of cidar vinegar. It tasted like summer.
Our task for the weekend was to finish building the trellis for our climbing rose. The fence posts were put in so Ernie and Owen and I trundled off to Lowe's to buy the other supplies we needed. We stopped at a four way stop and as we drove through we looked ahead and all thought, "what IS that in the road?" We got closer and realized it was a tiny, tiny little black kitten. Ernie stopped the car, looked out his window and said, "Well, whatcha doing down there little guy?" The kitten just looked up at him. And so my sweet sucker of a husband said, "Well, we can't just LEAVE him there" and pulled the car over to the curb. He got out and the kitten kind of danced away over to the side of the road and darted behind a fence. Owen climbed out and the two of them tried to sweet talk the little guy out of there. There was no sign any other cats or people. We stook and kind of wondered what to do for a bit. Eventually Ernie managed to reach through the fence and get him. He gave him to Owen and he held him. The poor little kitten was scared so I pulled off the blouse I had over my dress and let Owen wrap him up in that. He seemed to calm down a little bit then.
We talked a bit about the Humane Society but you know.....Owen seems to be taking SUCH good care of him that even Ernie's not fighting it. We'll make sure we don't see any notices for a lost kitten but honestly, no kitten that tiny should be in the middle of a busy street. Right now he is living in Owen's room and we'll get him into the vet (the kitten, not Owen) later this week. He's eating and drinking and seems to be getting more comfortable with Owen. His name for now is Rascal. He's a sweet pea.....as are all my other guys. I mean...just look at him.....
