Random Notes from the Sandwich Life

1. Owen is very proud of his strawberry plant. We told him we thought we should put a fence/netting around it to protect the berries but he was hesitant to ruin the aesthetics....at least that's the way I interpreted what he said...hard to say definitively. The bed sits right outside our kitchen window and Ernie has made it his personal mission to chase off rabbits and squirrels. It's about as effective as you can imagine. Today he was out there finishing our trellis up and went over to check on the plant. Guess what he found? A nest of baby bunnies. Geesh....just what you want in your garden...a nest of baby bunnies. I'm guessing that Owen, Mr. Softheart Jr., will not want them moved. This does not bode well.

2. Ernie finished the trellis!!! And yes, our house needs painting. And no, it's not getting painted. We've got to get the leak in the roof fixed first. Oh, let's not think about the roof. NEXT TOPIC!

3. As the storm started to develop yesterday afternoon we went outside to sit and watch the clouds. Owen wanted to come with us but he didn't want to leave Rascal alone in case he got scared. Eventually he came out and sat with us on the porch while it rained because he said Rascal wasn't noticing a damn thing. Owen's going to be a very good father.

4. My yard continues to um.....evolve. Yes, that's the word. I used to wish our front yard had more sun so I could garden more. Then we fell in love with our shade and all our beautiful hostas and for awhile our front yard looked wonderful. Then our lives got more complicated and we got more tired or something and it started to....evolve. Then we lost a lot of our shade from various tree problems and our hostas have started to die off and it looks like hell. Now all I want is all my shade. We are never satisfied with what we have, are we? I keep thinking I have more shade than I do so we planted a tomato plant and a pepper plant along our fence as an experiement to see how much sun it actually gets these days.... Owen did a good job getting the bed ready and planting.

5. I asked Leo to pull out some plants by the front steps. I adore that child but he is essentially useless when he's outside. It's going to be an interesting summer as I've decided since he doesn't have other plans for the summer he will need to do some outside work every day. And of course he insists on wearing his beloved Pendulum sweatshirt which is just PERFECT for 90 degree weather. My sweet pea. I know that stubborness will serve him well somehow....as long as we survive it.

6. In cat updates, Annie, normally the bitchiest of the cats (and I say that with love and respect) appears to be the kindest and calmest when it comes to Rascal. Bob seems somewhat scared of him. Snicker. Here he is peering out from behind the fireplace, checking to see where Rascal is....

7. We've got a bit less than three weeks til our next house concert-----we're really looking forward to having Wild Ponies. Does anyone remember reading all the ads in the Illinois Entertainer in the 80s and 90s? One of them stuck in our head...a show was advertised "Tough Love, formerly Bitch" and for some unknown reason that phrase pops up in our conversation from time to time. So whenever I start to write "Wild Ponies, formerly known as Doug and Telisha Williams" I think of that. No musical similarities of course.

8. Oh wow....the glories of youtube. I just found a video of Bitch (eventually Tough Love). Life is good. After all these years saying Tough-Love-Formerly-Bitch I'd never heard them.....

9. Back to Wild Ponies.....as always, I love, love, love our Mark Gerking poster!!! Check it out on facebook. It should be a great show. I'm thinking SaladFest for the food and maybe we'll grill something too.....gotta think on it.... Put it on your calendars and TELL YOUR FRIENDS!
