And So It Goes, Yet Again: Brains and Ponies and Leaks
Hopefully Ernie had a pretty nice Father's Day. We took him to Exile so he could get some records, or cds as it were, and then to Fries and Peanuts. I caught this picture of Owen and Ernie looking at vinyl and for some reason couldn't help but think that they were in their natural habitat....
Ernie and I had a lazy afternoon, hanging out in the yard and then sitting inside and watching videos of Dan Stuart and Steve Wynn doing their Danny and Dusty stuff. I attempted to fry chicken for Ernie for Father's Day...it was so-so....I've got to work on that.....
When I went up to bed later, I heard the upstairs toilet running but didn't think much of it. Ernie came up a few minutes later, grumbling about it running, and went it to try to fix it. Now, let me tell you that this toilet has been the bane of our existance in the last few years AND it's ugly. Leo pointed out that it's dated 1970-something on it, which he thinks is hysterically old. Anyway....I couldn't totally follow Ernie's explanation of the mechanics of it all but suffice to say something broke and the whole damned bathroom flooded...which led to a waterfall through the ceiling into our kitchen.
Yes.
There was much screaming and yelling and swearing, gathering of towels and buckets. Ernie had trouble getting the water turned off at the toilet so he tried to turn the main water line off. Well damn....it's behind umpteen piles of junk in the basement and, and, and.....let's just say it was an ugly end to a pretty nice day.
Eventually he got the water stopped without turning off the main water line. I have no fucking idea what really went on. I just kept sending the boys up or down the stairs, as appropriate, to see if he needed help. The sounds emanating from Ernie were akin to when the father tries to fix the furnace in A Christmas Story. At long last the water was down to drips and we all sat in the living room looking at each other. Finally somebody said, "Uh, Happy Father's Day Dad." At least we did get a laugh out of it. Ernie always takes this kind of situation as some kind of personal insult so Owen and I poured the last of some whisky we had tucked up above the stove into a tumbler and gave it to him. The boys gave him hugs. Ernie drank his whiskey down and we tumbled into bed. I looked at my iPad for awhile but then stopped and played the Brains real loud. Lately it's my favorite thing to fall asleep to....
And don't forget.....Wild Ponies on Friday....I woke up in the middle of the night, when Rascal was attacking me, with this song in my head.....it's gonna be a good show....
