I Want You More Than Quiet
An addendum to my comments about Owen and his never-ending noise. The other evening Ernie and I were trying to watch an episode of Treme. Owen was sort of watching it with us, but was accompanying the show with various hoots, hollers, singing, joking, etc. He ignored repeated shushings until one got loud and irritated enough to hurt his feelings. He got up in a dignified manner and took himself (and his bow tie) out into the living room. A little while later I admitted to Ernie that I missed Owen. He rolled his eyes. I called Owen in and asked him to return. He politely said that he couldn't because he knew he'd be loud again. I sat there and kind of blinked at him for a moment and then I told him, "Well....I want you more than quiet." He gave me a puzzled look and I explained that I wanted his company, complete with noise, more than I wanted quiet. He gave me a little smile, nodded and came and curled up with me.
I mean, there's no question. I'll always want that boy more than I want quiet.
