Daft Punk Harvest
Just the other day I was lamenting the fact that the boys have gotten too old for me to yell, "Everybody in the car, we're going for a drive." They find these rambles through the cornfields less enchanting than they used to. However, a few weeks ago after getting pumpkins at Negangard's we found ourselves on a road barely paved and when Owen kept nagging me that I should let him drive some time, I stopped the car and said, "o.k." He stared at me in shock. I like that I can still surprise him sometimes. We let him drive about 40 feet down the empty road but boy was his spirit flying high after that. Of course he couldn't wait to lord it over Leo.
So yesterday, on that utterly gorgeous fall day? I told the boys that if they came out driving with us, maybe we'd find an abandoned spot and let them drive for a minute or two. Into the car they hopped, no excuses of car sickness or too busy playing a game with friends. Ernie and I were on the hunt for some abandoned motel cottages that Teri and Brian had found on one of their rambles, but we never managed to find them. It didn't matter a bit though as we had a day as beautiful as the fall weather. Owen acted as DJ and I will now always associate Daft Punk with the gold leaves, the lemon yellow of smashed hedge apples, and the rustling of the dry corn waiting to be harvested rushing past my window.
I love those boys.
We turned around at this spot. You could tell it hadn't been too long since a farmhouse stood there....the water pump just beyond, the hostas, peonies and ivy still standing guard.
