A Glorious Evening
I had the loveliest of evenings last night. I got home from work between 4:30 and 5:00. It had been a busy day and I hadn't slept well the night before so I was feeling bone tired. Ernie greeted me in the front yard where he had a fire going. We plopped in our chairs. The guys had mowed the grass earlier and my nasturtiums and purple kale were absolutely glowing in the low light. I paged through a cooking magazine as we chatted, and admired the HUGE lemongrass my beloved Sue had dropped off. Then Teri and Brian stopped by to pick up their crockpot I had borrowed and we convinced them to sit and have a drink. It was a gorgeous, gorgeous evening, sitting and chatting and luxuriating in the warm evening and fall yard, watching the bats as they came out. Teri and Brian took off and Ernie ordered pizza for us. We sat by the fire watching the sky get more vividly blue as it darkened. We got our pizza, watched a bit of netflix and then I tucked myself into bed to read. And yeah, it WAS barely 8:30. Long day, remember?
A few minutes later though, a text from my friend Nancy popped up. I work with Nancy, and although we never knew each other until I started working with her, we seem to have all sorts of strange overlaps in people we know.
Nancy laughed at me some more and finally I said, "O.k. God damn it....I'll put my bra back on and go."
I got out of bed and went and stuck my head in Owen's room. I told him I was going out because I had to see a friend I hadn't seen in some 25 years. His eyes got big and he said, "Well, this is unprecedented!" I said, "Do you think if I wear this dress I can get away without putting my bra back on? He squinched up his face and tipped it to one side. I took that to mean no. Then he told me my dress was too casual. I countered by suggesting I wear a black shirt he approves of over it. He o.k.'d that. I stuck my head in Leo's room and told him we were going out. I didn't torture him by asking if I had to put my bra back on. I put my damn bra back on and out we headed.
Glorious. A glorious evening. I got hugs from the ever beautiful LuAnn and Stephanie....oh, and Peggy Ball too! And most of all I got lots of hugs from Lori....as gorgeous and funny as ever. We shared phone pics of our kids and smiled and giggled a lot and it felt pretty much the same it did 25+ years ago. I finished my tumbler of wine and told her I had to go back to bed. Gave good bye hugs and happily went home and tumbled into bed. I woke up this morning feeling good.
A glorious evening. Thanks all. A glorious, glorious evening.
