Sweet Nights
Some evenings just go better than others, and God knows we've had some bungled nights. Last night though? Last night was lovely....just lovely.
Ernie picked me up from work and we chatted about the day on the way home. There were no boys around when I got in the house. I shouted upstairs but got no response. I changed my clothes (er, well, took off my bra) and sat on the couch and Ernie handed me a glass of wine. We talked a bit more and then Leo popped out and came downstairs and perched on the arm of the couch. We chatted, and chatted some more. Eventually he cleared off a chair (because all surfaces have to be cleared off in this house) and sat down. Biology, politics, movies, writing....I can't even think of what we all covered. Leo is an interesting conversationalist. After awhile Owen came downstairs and lured Ernie down to the basement. A short while later they came up, got an amp and a guitar and went back down again. Leo and I kept chatting, as guitar began emanating from the basement. Owen popped upstairs and reported excitedly that although Ernie wasn't completely showing it, he thought he was really happy. He went back downstairs and I dragged Leo in the kitchen with me so I could start dinner. He sat and talked and showed me Imgur posts while I realized I didn't have what I needed and changed plans to a simple roast chicken, roasted smashed sweet little red new potatoes and a salad. Love Farmer Greg's stuff. Those potatoes were ridiculously sweet and good, not to mention the greens. And a good roast chicken with just lots of salt, pepper, and lemon is a thing of wonder.
Leo and I headed back to the living room and Ernie and Owen came upstairs. We all sat and chatted and hooted with laughter over odds and ends. Eventually it got late, dinner was had, Leo headed up to his homework and Owen shot back and forth between his room and the media room where we were curled up with some bad tv.
I went to bed happy. Not all nights are this sweet but damn, I hang on to them when they are.
Who knew, when they were this little in 2002, that they would be such delightful company?
