Rascal, John Travolta, and Other Random Notes
1. Rascal positively struts around the house. He's so sleek and confident. The other day as I watched him walk across the living room I realized that he reminds me somewhat of this:
2. In other news, we finally got Ernie's official PSA results and they are again undetectable. Relief. So we're assuming the shoulder pain is just muscular or whatever. The oncologist did want to see us so we are going in next Monday at the delightful time of 7:40 in the morning, but I feel much better about it all than I did.
3. The other day Ernie and I were watching some Food Network show. Side note: I gave up the cooking channel when I changed cable plans, but I couldn't give up Food Network. It's somewhat ridiculous because I rarely watch it....but there was a time, in its earlier years, in which I adored it, so I still have some kind of residual fondness. Anyway...the contestants were asked to prepare a dish that epitomized summer to them. It made us think....what do we think of when we think of summer foods of our childhoods. We both said hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad and popsicles. I also think of lobster and clams because we only had that when we visited our grandparents in the summer (even thought I would only eat clams when I was little). What do you think of when you think of summer foods? Now I think homegrown tomatoes, but as a little kid I didn't like them so it doesn't come to mind in the same way. Ohhhh....and Good Humor...even though it was a rare treat. Remember the ANXIETY, sitting in your front yard, hearing the ice cream truck and wondering if it would come close????
There's also this, by Jonathan Richman (great clip), but I fear, for better or worse, I am more of a David Lee Roth girl. Yes, I know. There's a time I wouldn't have admitted it, but there you go. Jonathan Richman kind of gets on my nerves these days.
4. Every day Ernie drives me to work and we pass the new golf facility on St. Mary's Road. Every night he picks me up and we drive by it again. Only ONCE have we seen people actually golfing on it (it was a day of great excitement, I kid you not) but every single day it seems we see people mowing it, mowing in circles as they follow the landscape of it all. As we passed it last night Ernie said, "I think I finally figured it out. It's a training course... for people learning to mow golf courses." I think he may be right. It just seems so sad, there was this lovely open field and now there's this big empty golf course, which they mow, and mow, and mow... Eh, I don't know. I just miss the St. Mary's Road of old...
6. Here's beautiful purple tomatillo from Sola Gratia. I just pureed the mess of tomatillos we got with a jalapeno from the garden and a dash of olive oil, salt and pepper. It made a nice sharp, spicy salsa of sorts for some grilled chicken.
7. And last but not least....a different version of the classic tomato sandwich....warmed pita with heirloom tomatoes that were chopped, salted, and sat a bit to pull extra juices out---making them extra tomato-y, with a bit a asiago cheese. Pretty magnificent, and very summer.
