Anne McCue at the Rosebowl, Sunday Afternoon on April 3rd!

I can’t, can’t, can’t wait to see Anne McCue this coming Sunday afternoon at the Rosebowl. A million thanks to the Whip at Backland Radio, Larry Williams and Lori Allen, for all they do for our local music scene. When they book a show I always know it’s going to be a good one. Usually I lie low the day after a house concert (a few spots left folks...get in touch if you want to attend), but this one will pull me out...and a 3 pm show at the Rosebowl....you really can't go wrong....

We were fortunate enough to have Anne for a Sandwich Life House Concert show last summer and she absolutely blew us away. She is NOT someone you can easily categorize. Yes, she’s a truly amazing guitarist…but she’s also got the songwriting---and the vision. She’s somehow both demure and sultry, and completely self assured in her guitar playing,….. in her persona, in her music, in her songs. She leaves you feeling that you’ve just seen just a little bit though….that there’s even more in there to discover. You know how it is when, as soon as a show is over you start thinking about the next one? Bits of her performance from last July have stayed with me vividly, far more than other shows, even from other artists I love. What WAS that one song that had guitar swirling everywhere through our living room while everyone puzzled how one small person was creating all that by herself?

She’s got a fascinating background, ranging from jazz to rock to folk to video and radio. She started her first band in high school, ended up playing in Girl Monstar (with Sherry Rich). She went on to play in Vietnam for a year, she's had success with folk, played at Lilith Fair but is also an upfront rock and roller and plays the blues no questions asked. Oh yeah...and then there's her love affair with Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian and Cab Calloway. REALLY? Yes, really. She can rock your ass off with her guitar….strong muscular slide and the blues…and then she sings wistfully and all you can do is swing, swing, swing.

Anne is a musician who can leave you a little off kilter because she is different than anything you’ve seen and heard. And let’s face it…those people that are hard to categorize? They are some of my favorites. Anybody want to try to describe David Olney? Describe Willie Nelson? These are the ones that have, not just the talent and work ethic, but also the magic that is unique unto themselves…and they stay TRUE to that. THAT is what makes music special for me. And it’s what makes Anne McCue special.

I’m excited to see her with a trio, as she was solo at our place. She’ll have drummer Pete Pulkrabek and bassist Jimmy Sullivan. Oh yeah, and apart from how much I love Anne's music? I also really like HER. I love it when musicians I like are also great people. Nice, nice, nice.
