Just Like Amy Rigby
Amy Rigby is famous in our family as the origin of our standard phrase for meeting someone and immediately feeling like they are an old friend. In our house, that's known as "JUST LIKE AMY RIGBY." Owen, of course, came up with that phrase when she played at our house last time. Good God...he was only 7 then I think.... For years whenever he met someone that he instantly bonded with, it was "JUST LIKE AMY RIGBY." God I love that boy. Geesh.
Anyway....I am thrilled beyond words that she is coming back this month, on Friday, October 28th...the day before our anniversary so she'll be a perfect gift! Amy's songs are so personal, so strongly stated in her worldview that particularly as a woman (not that males don't love them just as much mind you), they hit so freaking hard. She's also the master of a pop song. Sometimes it's the littlest detail in her songs that kills me. She laughs at me for always calling Why Do I the 'frozen waffle song,' but it's that one little human detail that just makes that song so REAL to me though. I mean I never thought frozen waffles would be a core food of one of my children....but there was a period...oh, and good God don't even bring UP the Great Waffle Shortage of 2009.....that they were...and when she says she's "colder than a frozen waffle" well...it just doesn't get more real than that....and that's how music should be...that's why music matters to us...because it's real and it hits us in the chest when we see a bit of our life reflected.
I can't wait.
Why Do I
I'm tired of being tired of being
Why am I always disagreeing?
Why am I always giving in to my evil twin
I don't know why
I'm making trouble just to make it
Why don't I just lay back and take it
Why am I never comfortable just being comfortable?
I try to suck it up
But then I always fuck it up
Why do I pull wings off butterflies
Look for things that hurt my eyes
I kiss the boys but I'm the one who cries
Why do I get off on misery
Loneliness feels good to me
I'm happy when I'm all hung out to dry
Why do I
I look sweet but deep inside I'm awful
I'm colder than a frozen waffle
I'm always searching for the rip in the silver lining
Here it is
I'm busy being so downtrodden
I'm just a peach that's going rotten
I wanna save the other peaches so I roll away
I'm careful where I land
Does anybody understand?
Why do I pull wings off butterflies
Look for things that hurt my eyes
I kiss the boys but I'm the one who cries
Why do I get off on misery
Loneliness feels good to me
I'm happy when I'm all hung out to dry
Why do I
Why do I
