The Esteemed Patty Melt

When I was growing up every Saturday we would go shopping.  First we would go to the grocery store, then we would go to the fabric store.  My mother sewed virtually all our clothes....even our winter coats, nightgowns, etc., you name it.  And she LOVED fabric.  I loved going to the fabric store....picking your favorite fabric from each row, the thunk of the big pattern books as you set them on the counter.  To this day I love fabric stores although unfortunately I didn't inherit my mother's love or talent for sewing.

Sometimes after that we would go to lunch.  I particularly remember going to the Golden Bear....where was it?  Downers Grove maybe?  I forget.  Sometimes I would get fish and chips.....the rest of the time I would get a patty melt.  Ahhhh.....the pleasures of a good patty melt.

Where to go for a patty melt?

It's GOTTA be rye bread....and of course the carmelized onions....  Maybe a little pleated paper cup of coleslaw on the side?  Damn, I love coleslaw....and onion rings.  Judi loved onion rings.  Ernie's not crazy about them so generally I would only eat them when Judi visited.

But a patty melt? mmmmm, I haven't had a patty melt for many years, and you know?  I think I'm due.

Recommendations please.
