Spectacular Fall
A quiet, quiet weekend. I can't say I accomplished a lot but it felt good to be quiet. It felt like the first weekend in a long time that we'd had nothing really scheduled. I don't know if that's true or not but either way it felt long awaited. Friday afternoon we took a long drive out in the country, listened to the dry corn rustle and stopped and bought a few gourds, leaving our money in the bucket. We stopped and visited our friend Amy and had a drink before picking up the boys and going home to luxuriate in the very Friday-ness of it all.
Friday evening the sunset was extraordinary....we looked out the kitchen window as we cooked and the grasses were lit up to a fiery burgundy.
Ernie picked Owen up from a sleepover on Saturday morning and he came home and pronounced that we should have a lazy day. The day had already gotten away from me and between that and the gray clouds, I just couldn't disagree. I spent the day binge watching a show and making Beef Bourguignon. The house smelled incredible. When we were getting ready to add the brandy and flame it, Ernie went upstairs to inform Owen and he was down like a shot. Given ourpast history with the smoke bomb going off in the kitchen and me helplessly screeching, "Don't was have a..a....a...THING?" we were dull enough to bring the fire extinguisher into the room. Owen looked at the dusty thing suspiciously and said, "Does it still work?" and Ernie reminded him that it went off when they knocked it over recently.
Owen begged to have the honors so he poured the brandy in and lit in and Good GOD did it flame....totally freaked me out. I'm not sure what it did to the microwave above it but flame it did.....Owen added the bottle of red wine and we tucked it in the oven.
Sunday morning it was cold in the house. Owen came downstairs bundled up in a winter coat of Ernie's, which he seems to have appropriated. Ernie made muffins, as Leo had requested and it was a good Sunday morning.
Ernie and I spent a good part of the day going over bills and talking about money and budgets. It was unpleasant enough that at least I feel like I accomplished something. We desperately want to get a second car but I don't know if it's in the cards. It would change our daily routines a bit and I would love to have the freedom but I don't know if it's worth it. We shall see. We drove around and looked at a few things and talked....and then we headed over to meet friends at Fries and Peanuts. We sat outside and it felt like a golden afternoon.
Monday looms but I feel bolstered by the weekend a bit. Oh, that and the good root beer Teri and Brian gave us.... Onward to the week....
This Long Ryders song is going through my head. I can never decided whether they mean 'spectacular fall' as in fall from grace or fall from something, or 'spectacular fall' the season. Probably the former but it still comes to my mind every fall... Oh, and Ernie is practically twitching he is so excited about the upcoming Long Ryders boxed set this fall....I guess it really will be a spectacular fall!
